Deep end refers to the side of the pool that is so deep that you can’t stand so you have to swim. If you are in the deep end and don’t know how to swim, this could be life threatening.

Swim in the deep end

  • to be in a situation without enough experience or expertise.

    • I started a new job and I feel like I’m swimming in the deep end.
    • If you decide to go, you will be swimming in the deep end. Are prepared for that?

Thrown into the deep end

  • To be put into a situation where you don’t have enough experience or expertise.
    • They didn’t give me any training at my new job and just threw me into the deep end.
    • My parents never worried much about things. They were the type of parents who would just throw you into the deep end.
